Go east? To ride your bike?... You bet'cha! Swim and play vollyball at Toronto's famous eastern beaches - without the hastle of finding a parking spot. You'll be shocked by the beauty and accessibility of the Highland Creek Bikeway north, then east, then south from the Guildwood GO Train. The Rouge Hill GO station is a cyclist's gateway to great waterfront riding - so Durham ho! Bike all the way to Whitby, or just a few blocks east to your favourite fishing spot at the mouth of the Rouge River!

BEACHES to CABBAGETOWN - from TTC Main Street Subway or GO Danforth Train

Take you're bike on the TTC subway east (or west) to 'Main Street' station, or the GO Train east (or west) to 'GO Danforth' station... and you're on your way - at about 30 kms/hr all downhill!  Ride your bike to Toronto's famed Beaches (aka The Beach) neighbourhood - then hit the sun and the sand. Why not stay the day? Then it's west along the blossoming Toronto waterfront to Cabbagetown for dinner. Catch the subway home, or back to the GO Train at Danforth or Union.

Bikes and Transit Maps:

Route Notes:

  • Exit at the west end of either subway or train station. Ride south on Bike Route 59 down Main St., or take the sidewalk (Caution: there is an incredible blind spot at the top of the overpasds over the train tracks!)
  • Follow the blue bike route signs to the Lake closely: the right turn at Glen Ames is hidden by leaves.
  • Join the Waterfront Trail west at Kew Gardens. The Toronto Bike Map and Waterfront Trail signage will take you where you want to go.
  • After the Spit, take Unwin Ave. west to visit Cherry Beach, then up through The Portlands via Cherry Street. Under the Gardiner Expressway, look for the trail east to The Don.
  • Use the bikestairs at the bridge at Riverdale Park. Exit the park to the west to explore Cabbagetown. Take Parliament St. north to get to Castle Frank subway. Cross the Prince Edward Viaduct east to Broadview subway station, with an elevator.

GUILDWOOD - and the Highland Creek Bikeway East to Rouge Hill

Very few people know that from the train platform at Guildwood station in eastern Scarborough, some seriously fun ravine bike riding starts hardly 300 metres away. Follow the Toronto Cycling map across Kingston Road, up Celeste and left on Livingston and you've found it! Highland Creek is especially dynamic after a rainfall. Wet or dry, you'll never be able to keep this trail your little secret!

Bikes and Transit Maps:

Route Notes:

  • Exit the train station by crossing Kingston Rd. at the lights to Celeste, then left on Greenvale Terrace.
  • The bikeway trailhead is to the right at the end of the street.
  • The ride is easy and smooth, but do have a copy of the Toronto Bike Map to find your way - it is easy to get disoriented.
  • If you get disoriented, simply follow the creek and never exit uphill out of the ravine (except slightly when the trail crosses Old Kingston Rd.)
  • At Old Kingston Rd. cross the bridge over the creek. The other direction will take you into UofT Scarborough.
  • The trail continues to Lower Highland Creek Park, then joins the Waterfront Trail at the Lake.
  • Continue east to the Rouge Hill GO Station, or Pickering, Ajax and Whitby.
  • Here's the GO Train Schedule for the Lakeshore line.

ROUGE HILL - East to Pickering, Ajax + Whitby

There are two great things about cycling to or from the Rouge Hill GO train station: 1) Waterfront Toronto's amazing waterfront regeneration work, and 2) There's no hills - almost! Take the day and follow the wind and the waterfront all the way to Whitby - or vice versa. And remember - it's always cool down by the Lake... way cool!

Bikes and Transit Maps:

Route Notes:

  • The Waterfront Trail crosses the train tracks at the Rouge Hill GO station - follow the sign east along Lawrence Ave toward Rouge Park (north of the train tracks).
  • Coming soon: Waterfront Toronto will soon finish the new trail that runs along the south side of the train tracks along the lakeshore.
  • The bridge over the Rouge River marks the border into Pickering. The Waterfront Trail is well marked - GO Train stations included - all the way from there to Ajax to Whitby.
  • Stops along the way include: Rouge Beach, Petticoat Creek, Pickering Beach and Harbourfront, Ajax Rotary Pavillion and Waterfront, Lynde Shores Conservation Area and Whitby Marina and Harbourfront.
  • Here's the GO Train Schedule for the Lakeshore line.
