Finally, bike rider can GO.
Cyclists have been given the green light to take their bikes on the GO Transit system along the Ajax-Union train route on Sundays this summer starting June 1.
The announcement was made yesteday at Union Station and is part of a move to promote trails in Ajax, Pickering and Scarborough, said GO-by-Bike founder Donald Wiedman.
"There is an abundance of naturally spectacular... cycling routes to enjoy across the GTA," Wiedman said. "You can easily get to many with your bike from select GTA GO Train and TTC Subway stations."
Currently due to high passenger volume, bikes can only be brought on trains during off-peak hours.
GO managing director and CEO Gary McNeil said the announcement ties in with the transit authority's plans to extend the bike carry-on service to its bus fleet starting with the Hamilton-Union route during off peak hours in the next few months. McNeil said the organization is also looking for ways to accomodate cyclists on its bus and train systems during rush hours.
Meanwhile, GO plans to install two trial bike lock-up shelters in Ajax and Mississauga statios next month followed by one at every station by the end of 2009.
